The main purpose of food adulteration is to alter the quality of food products in terms of color, odor, taste, volume and shelf life of food for economic advantage of the seller. 

However, what is the risk involved with food adulteration?

Food adulteration is a common problem in both developed and developing countries. A less‐developed country is even more vulnerable to food adulteration problems. In India, quite alarmingly, a wide range of products are susceptible to adulteration. Be it our regular staples like rice, soy and wheat, dairy products like ghee, milk and butter, popular beverages, and even condiments and spices, almost all of them are being adulterated. However, Adulterated food products are responsible for mild to severe health impacts as well as financial damage. Diarrhea, nausea, allergic reaction, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc. are frequently observed illnesses upon consumption of adulterated food. And the components which are added during the process of food adulteration is considered as Adulterants.
